Whistler’s Answers: October 24, 1985

In the 1980s the Whistler Question began posing a question to three to six people and publishing their responses under “Whistler’s Answers” (not to be confused with the Whistler Answer).  Each week, we’ll be sharing one question and the answers given back in 1985.  Please note, all names/answers/occupations/neighbourhoods represent information given to the Question at the time of publishing and do not necessarily reflect the person today.

Some context for this week’s question: In the October 3, 1985 edition of the Whistler Question, the paper reported on the solutions presented by the municipal Planning and Development Committee to the parking problems identified in a study. It appears that visitors and residents were finding that there was not enough parking for those accessing the Whistler Village and this problem was only going to get worse as some of the lots then used for parking were developed. Two sites, one next to the practice fairway and one (Lot 50) next to the Keg building, were slated for development in the next year, which would have eliminated 500 parking spaces.

Question: Do you have a problem finding winter parking in Whistler? What do you think should be done about it?

Linda Prentice – Ecosign – Whistler

Last year I had an employee parking pass, which I’m hoping to get again this year. They should have those available, particularly for people working in the valley. For $25 you get a place for your car. You usually get at least one ticket every year before you realize they’re serious about parking enforcement. If the Keg lot goes, that will really pose a problem.

Colin Pitt-Taylor – Chef – Whistler

There’s no problem parking, except on weekends. You’ve just got to look around. During the week there’s hardly any problem. This is a resort – people are supposed to be athletic. So what, if you have to walk 200 feet from your car to the village. If people have to walk more than 10 feet to the village, is that a parking problem?

Laurie Vance – Hotel Sales – Whistler

Yes, there is a parking problem. Convenience parking is non-existent. Overnight, over-height parking for visitors is non-existent. Overflow parking is non-existent. On weekends in the summer it’s also a problem. I hope that the transportation study they’re working on now will resolve all these problems.
