In the 1980s the Whistler Question began posing a question to three to six people and publishing their responses under “Whistler’s Answers” (not to be confused with the Whistler Answer).  Each week, we’ll be sharing one question and the answers given back in 1982.  Please note, all names/answers/occupations/neighbourhoods represent information given to the Question at the time of publishing and do not necessarily reflect the person today.

Some context for this week’s question: In August 1982, a contract for the construction of the Gondola Reservoir supply main was awarded to a North Vancouver firm named Ocean Point Contractors Ltd. and then rescinded and awarded to a local company, Coastal Mountain Excavation Ltd. This, and other tenders such as a snow clearing contract in October, led to questions from some people about the way the municipality tendered contracts.

Question: What do you think of municipal tendering practices?

Nigel Woods – Heavy construction contractor – Alpine Meadows

Their problem is they’re inconsistent. It’s of benefit to the area to give contracts to the local guys and if there is more than one of them then awarding should depend on performance.

Art Den Duyf – Contractor of sorts (owner of Sabre) – White Gold

The tendering is usually done properly. I just think it’s a pity at times that Council runs interference with its own staff.

Rick Crofton – Contractor – Alpine Meadows

They seem to leave a lot to be desired. I’m all for letting the local guys get the jobs and if two local contractors bid they should just split it.

Some context for this week’s question: There was a municipal election in Whistler in November 1982. Only three members of previous councils intended to run for positions, one for council and two for mayor, so many of the candidates (though active in the community and, for the most part, pretty well known) were unknown political quantities.

Question: What do you think the issues should be in the upcoming municipal election?

Vikki Fuller – Future Village store operator – Alpine Meadows

Sane and responsible planned growth.

Robin Crumley – Hotel Manager – Alpine Meadows

The main issue should be how Council plans to finance the Sports & Convention Centre. I’d also like to hear candidates’ ideas on the general direct the resort is taking. It’s important to keep the momentum up so I don’t think a caretaker Council is sufficient.

Pierre Trudeau – Insulation contractor – Alpine Meadows

I want to see candidates talk about things that are of interest to local residents like the Sports & Convention Centre.

Maybe they shouldn’t put so much emphasis on tourists and make this into a place where there’s something to do besides drinking and skiing.

Some context for this week’s question: A major recession hit North America in 1981 and the impacts were still being felt in 1982. For many people, this meant making changes to the ways they recreate, including plans they might have for the ski season.

Question: How have the current economic conditions affected your skiing plans this year?

Darell (and Matthew) Munro – Chiropractor – Abbotsford

I don’t think we’ll downhill ski at all this winter. We won’t be using the lifts, but will get into cross-country skiing instead.

Adair Green – Accountant – Vancouver

I won’t be going to Aspen this year. In these tough economic times Whistler is the only place to ski because you sure get value for your money.

Jack Robertson – Bartender – Brio Estates

The recession has affected everyone, but somehow I’m going to get the money together to go skiing. That’s why I’m here.

Some context for this week’s question: In 1982, Frans Carpay planned to develop an equestrian centre on an 8.2 acre site in Whistler Cay. The development would have included stables and a 40-room lodge. Some owners of neighbouring properties and residents of the area opposed the development for various reasons, such as the scale of development, the potential noise, and the inclusion of accommodations.

Question: What do you think of the plans for the equestrian centre proposed for Whistler Cay?

Terry Rodgers – Alderman – White Gold Estates

As I said at the last all-candidates meeting, I’m in favour of the plans although I understand and appreciate the concerns of nearby residents.

Don Biggar – Consulting Engineer – Alpine Meadows

Well let’s not stop there. I’d like to see a PNE-style playland in Alpha Lake, a waterslide in Wayside Park, waterskiing on Alta Lake, an airport on Green Lake and a brothel on Nesters Road. What resident would be opposed to things which would be so good for the community?

June Paley – WMSC Hostess – Whistler Cay (MDC)

It doesn’t matter about the stables – it’s the hostel I think is questionable. I’d like to know more about the square footage mentioned in Bylaw 311. I think access roads are important as well as much in the interest of the horses’ safety as convenience of residents.
