Whistler’s Answers: June 2, 1983

In the 1980s the Whistler Question began posing a question to three to six people and publishing their responses under “Whistler’s Answers” (not to be confused with the Whistler Answer).  Each week, we’ll be sharing one question and the answers given back in 1983.  Please note, all names/answers/occupations/neighbourhoods represent information given to the Question at the time of publishing and do not necessarily reflect the person today.

Some context for this week’s question: At the end of May 1983, the Canada West Ski Area Association hosted its convention in Whistler, including a trade show and its Annual General Meeting. This brought together delegates from ski resorts in the region and many different companies involved in the industry, whether representing snowmakers, timing computers, or jackets. The ski season had, however, just ended and businesses were adjusting to a quieter season.

Question: As part of the Canada West Ski Area Association convention, how was your reception at Whistler?

Marty Handlon – Ski Area Operator – Jasper

Well, we had an unfortunate experience at one village restaurant where we waited two hours for lunch, but another one was excellent – they deserve a gold star. I think things are like this in any resort between seasons. I had just thought since things had been open last weekend they could have remained open a few more days.

Jimmie Spencer – Executive Director, Canada West Ski Area Association – Vernon

Our reception here was excellent and the convention facilities were great. It was disappointing that more restaurants and shops weren’t open because we had hoped our members could see Whistler in its growing stages. Having more available would have been more complimentary and comprehensive. They did well with what they had – specially for the trade show.

Bob Kowalewich – Comptroller – Sunshine Village

The convention might have messed things up a bit by over-booking, but I think everyone at Whistler did an excellent job. Because I came as part of a group I found all my meals looked after nicely. Someone here on their own could have a problem here though. Sure, some of the shops seemed to be closed, but we weren’t here to go shopping.
