In the 1980s the Whistler Question began posing a question to three to six people and publishing their responses under “Whistler’s Answers” (not to be confused with the Whistler Answer).  Each week, we’ll be sharing one question and the answers given back in 1982.  Please note, all names/answers/occupations/neighbourhoods represent information given to the Question at the time of publishing and do not necessarily reflect the person today.

Some context for this week’s question: In 1982, International Video Dating Ltd., which also ran International Escorts services, applied for a business permit to open an office in Whistler. According to the company, they were interested in testing Whistler’s market potential for an escort service. As of December 1982, the Whistler Council had reserved its decision on the permit until they had more information.

Question: Do you think an escort service such as the one now before Council is necessary for Whistler?

Michelle Fitzgerald – Deli Employee – High Forest

I really don’t think it’s necessary but it might be fun. It would be a good way to get a skiing partner. Not everyone wants to go into the bars and get drunk to meet people so this is a good alternative.

Neil Mawdsley – Golf Course Employee – Alpine Meadows

Sure it is. With the ratio of men to women what it is here I think something like this would bring down the frustration level. It can be pretty depressing to walk into a bar here and see 9/10 men. Maybe we wouldn’t have lost Maloney if we’d had this before!

Connie Kutyn – Whistler Village Employee – Whistler Cay

I was really surprised when I first heard about it. It seems sad to me that something like this would be necessary in a small town where everyone is already so friendly. Skiing is the easiest way of all to meet people. I just don’t like the whole idea.
