In the 1980s the Whistler Question began posing a question to three to six people and publishing their responses under “Whistler’s Answers” (not to be confused with the Whistler Answer).  Each week, we’ll be sharing one question and the answers given back in 1984.  Please note, all names/answers/occupations/neighbourhoods represent information given to the Question at the time of publishing and do not necessarily reflect the person today.

Some context for this week’s question: This one seems pretty self explanatory, so we think we’ll leave it there.

Question: Do you think there will be more snow this year than last?

Mike Thaxter – Contractor – Brio

There is definitely going to be more snow. Caterpillars had woolly coats this year. Another sign is that I’m doing snow removal. It’s going to be a real old-fashioned winter.

Jim Wilson – Logger – Alpine Meadows

Yes, I think so. There were a lot of deer down lower in the valleys earlier this fall. Normally you don’t see them down so low.

Mark Dowling – Sous Chef – Whistler Centre

I feel, yes, since we had such a warm, dry summer the remaining part of the fall will be colder and damper than usual. It will be like it was four years ago.

Some context for this week’s question: We’re not actually sure why they decided to ask about the police force this week, as there had been nothing in the news specific to the RCMP.

Question: What do you think of the police force at Whistler?

Ray Wiens – Minister – Alpine Meadows

I think their attitude is good and that they’re doing a great job. Working at Whistler it would be particularly hard to be objective but they do that well. It’s nice to seem them involved in the community. From what I hear we need some extra help for the winter though.

Mike Thaxter – Construction Worker – Alpine Meadows

In a small community like Whistler police can’t be distant – just because of the size of the place. Sure, I think these guys are doing a good job and are really well liked. Four or so years ago the police were a little more personally involved around here but then Whistler was even smaller then.

Reg Walser – Unemployed – Alpine Meadows

These guys are pretty good. They all seem laid back and are getting to know us well. They’re very friendly. I’ve lived in other small towns and found the police there very unpredictable. Here we have a good bunch and they’re doing their job well.
