What's the most puzzling thing about the Roundhouse? It might just be the Museum's first puzzle, featuring this shot of Whistler Mountain by Greg Griffith! Puzzles are available at the Whistler Museum gift shop while supplies last and make a great gift for any puzzler in your life. Photo: Greg Griffith Collection, 1980s The first gondola to run out of Skier's Plaza was the Whistler Express, which went up Whistler Mountain from 1988 to 2014 and replaced the Village Chair from 1980. The gondola base also housed the ticket windows, guest relations, and ski school, though you might notice something missing on the upper level. Fleece hats and multi-coloured ski suits were a common sight around ski hills in the 1990s, especially around Blackcomb Mountain's Kids Kamp. Photo: Blackcomb Mountain Collection, Randy Lincks, 1994 Until the Village and Olympic Chairs opened in 1980, all chairlifts on Whistler Mountain were named for colours: Red (1965), Blue (1966), Green (1968), Orange (1972), Olive (1972), Green 2 (1975), and Little Red (1978). (Most of these chairs were painted to match their names, like the Blue Chair pictured here, making them pretty easy to identify in colour photographs!) While most chairlifts today have a variety of names, the Red and Green Chairs live on in the Big Red Express and Emerald Express. Photo: George Benjamin Collection, 1973 And they're off! Grooming has always been an important part of skiing in the Whistler area, though when Whistler Mountain opened in 1966 the grooming was limited and could be inventive. In the early years on Whistler, there was only a single Thiokol and a bulldozer to maintain ski runs, increasing to four Thiokol 2100s by 1975. Grooming equipment had come a long way by 1980 when Blackcomb Mountain opened for skiing, and by the time these five groomers were heading down in 1987. Roger is one of ten inductees to the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame this year, recognizing his incredible 50-year career in the ski industry.
